Claude Cowork is the part of Claude that does real work on your computer. It writes your social posts, makes the images, posts them, and checks your website’s SEO, all from one place. But you only get it in the Claude desktop app. If you use Claude in a browser tab, you are missing it, and you are using maybe 20% of what Claude can do for your business.
That is the biggest mistake I see in my classes. Smart people, paying for Claude every month, and they never install it on their computer.
What Cowork Actually Does
The browser version of Claude answers questions. You ask, it writes, you copy and paste.
Cowork is different. It can open your files, create new ones, use the apps you connect to it (Gmail, Google Drive, your website, Canva and more), and finish a job from start to end. It also has skills, which are saved instructions for jobs you do again and again.
Think of it as a new employee who sits at your computer. The first week, you check everything. After that, you start to trust them.
Job 1: Running Your Social Media
This is the one I use most, so let me show you how it works for me.
- I give Cowork the idea. One or two lines: what I want to say and who it is for.
- Cowork writes the post in my voice and shows it to me.
- I approve it. Then it starts a second agent that creates the image.
- I approve the image. Then it posts it to my channels.
That is it. My job is the idea and two quick checks.
Here is the part nobody tells you. At the start, you approve every step. You fix the tone, you change a word, you say “no, not like that.” Cowork learns from this. After the first few posts, you trust it more, and you can let it run with very little approval, or almost none.
This saves me at least 15 minutes a day. That does not sound like much until you do the math. 15 minutes a day is about 7 hours a month. Over a year it is more than two full work weeks. Just for one job.
Job 2: Watching Your SEO
Most small business owners know SEO matters. Very few have time to check it.
Cowork can do it for you. When it writes a blog post or a web page, it uses the keywords your customers actually search for. It can also check how your website is doing on Google and compare it to your competitors, so you know where you are behind and what to fix first.
You do not need to learn SEO tools. You need to ask Cowork the right question, and give it access to the right data.
Why It Works for Some People and Not Others
When I read what other people write about Cowork, I see the same thing. Long lists of 12 or 15 “use cases” with a sample prompt for each one. That is not why it works.
It works when you train it. Three things make the difference:
- Skills. Saved instructions for each job, so Cowork does it your way every time, not a new way each time.
- The right connectors. Cowork can only post to Instagram or check Google if you connect those tools.
- A folder with your business in it. Your brand colours, your voice, your rules, examples of your past work. I keep all of mine in one folder, and Cowork reads it before every job. Without it, Cowork guesses. With it, Cowork sounds like you.
People who skip this step try Cowork once, get a generic result, and go back to the browser. People who take an afternoon to set it up end up with a helper that does an hour of work while they make coffee.
Why This Matters If You Run a Small Business
You do not have a marketing team. You are the marketing team, and the sales team, and the person who answers the phone.
Every job Cowork takes off your desk gives you time back for the work only you can do: talking to customers and growing the business. Social media and SEO are a good place to start because they never end. There is always another post to write and another competitor to watch.
How to Try It
Start small.
- Install the Claude desktop app on your Mac or Windows computer. Cowork needs a paid Claude plan.
- Make one folder for your business. Put in a short file about who you are, who your customers are, and how you like to write.
- Pick one job you do every week, like a social post. Ask Cowork to do it, and check the result.
- Fix what is wrong, and do it again next week. Each round, it gets closer.
