ChatGPT Is Getting Ads: If It Is Free, You Are the Product

OpenAI is putting ads inside ChatGPT, and they will only show to people on the free plan and the cheaper Go plan. Anyone paying for Plus, Pro, or Business sees none of them. That one detail tells you more about free software than anything I could write about the ads themselves.

What Actually Changed

Until now ChatGPT was a clean space with no ads. That is changing. OpenAI opened an Ads Manager, a tool that lets a business pay to show an ad inside the chat, and it is rolling out region by region.

Only free and Go users will see them, and only people 18 and over. There are no keywords to buy either. ChatGPT decides when to show an ad based on the conversation the person is already having.

Interesting. But not the point.

Free Was Never Free

Here is what I want you to take from this.

When you are not paying for a product, you are the product. That is not a clever line, it is the business model. Your data, your behaviour, your attention, and your time are what is being sold. The company is not doing you a favour. There is a transaction happening and you are sitting in the middle of it.

This is true of every free platform you have ever used. Facebook, Instagram, Google, the free tier of almost any tool you signed up for. You were always paying. You just could not see the price, so it felt like nothing.

What is happening at ChatGPT is that the price is becoming visible. An ad is the invisible cost finally showing up on the screen.

Why This Matters More With AI

This one is different from a social feed, and it is worth being careful about.

Think about what you actually type into ChatGPT. Not search terms. Whole problems. Your contract. Your staffing worry. Your numbers. The difficult email you cannot get right. People tell an AI things they would never put in a Google search box.

That makes the free tier of an AI tool a far richer place to sit than Facebook ever was. So the old advice counts double here. Know what you are putting into a free tool, and assume it is part of the deal.

Why This Matters If You Run a Small Business

Two practical things.

First, decide what your business information is worth. If you are putting client details, pricing, or contracts into a free AI account, the paid plan stops looking like a cost. It is the cheapest privacy you will ever buy, and it removes the ads as well.

Second, if you sell to the public, a new advertising channel is opening and it will be cheap for a while. Just remember who is on the other side of it. You would be reaching the people who chose not to pay, and that may or may not be your customer.

What to Do This Week

Open the AI tool you use most and check which plan you are on. Then ask yourself one question. What am I actually paying with here?

If the answer is your business data, you have your decision.

Free is a price, not the absence of one. Once you see it that way you make better choices about every tool you use, not just this one.

Work smarter, not harder.
